Sažetak
Slavonian kulen, a dry sausage, is one of the most famous original, Croatian traditional products, which is due to the mode of production and preparation proclaimed a product of exceptional importance of Croatian regions Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem. Although it has all the prerequisites, Slavonian kulen still does not have the geographical protection according to the current legislation. The aim of this paper was to examine whether producers of Slavonian kulen were familiar with geographical indications (GIs) and determine their expectations about these indications and impact of geographical indications on the competitiveness of Slavonian kulen. A telephone survey was conducted with 30 producers. The results show that less than half of respondents (43%) are fully familiar with GIs concept and their benefits, also most of them have very positive expectations of potential impact of GIs on Slavonian kulen competitiveness. All respondents (100%) expect that protection will increase consumer confidence in health safety of their product, while a slightly smaller proportion of respondents expect that protection will reduce abuse of the Slavonian kulen name (87%), increase familiarity (83%) and reduce ilegal market of the Slavonian kulen (80%). Large scale producers with more experience in production and producers with higher level of knowledge about GIs have more positive expectations compared to other respondents (P<0, 05). The results of this study provide information basis for better management of geographical indications. Results can be used by state and local governments to encourage the protection of products with geographical indications and producers who intend to use these labels.
