Sažetak
Within the scientific research project “Substance abuse among the general population in Croatia”, whose aim was to obtain data on the prevalence of substance use in the general population, data were collected on the participation in gambling activities, namely regarding lifetime prevalence of participation in gambling activities, last year prevalence and last month prevalence of participation in gambling activities, as well as the frequency of participation in each type of gambling activities. Data were also collected on perception of problems related to gambling activities, through perception of own problems related to gambling activities, and also through personal knowing people who have problems related to gambling activities. Research was conducted on a representative sample of 4756 respondents aged between 15 and 64. Results showed that 67% of respondents reported participation in gambling activities at least once in their lifetime, 38.3% reported participation in gambling activities in the last year, and 32.5% in the last month. In the last month the respondents most often participated in the following gambling activities: lottery 14.5%, betting 13.9% and bingo 13.1%. Prevalence of participation in gambling activities was larger among men than women, which was especially notable for betting. Considering problem gambling, 2.5% of respondents reported ever having problems related to gambling activities, while 34.7% of respondents indicated that they know someone who has such problems. This research on general level gives insight into the extent of participation in gambling activities among the general population in Croatia and the perception of problems related to gambling activities.
