Sažetak
The aim of this essay is twofold: the first part of the essay discusses the concept of guilt as psychological and psychoanalytical phenomenon. The second part of the essay attempts to show how the concept of guilt, in being such a significant part of psychological, historical, social, and literary discourse, has also become one of recurring themes and motifs in American literature, especially in the works written in the American South. One of Southern writers who could not escape “the burden of Southern history” – the shadow of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow legislation – is William Faulkner. Much of his fiction relies upon the idea of guilt and compensation and this differentiation is most specifically highlighted in his Sanctuary (1931).Through the character of Temple Drake, Faulkner appears to show the genesis of her guilt, its features as well as her compensatory actions aimed at restoring severed family bonds.
