Sažetak
Research show that Croatia is an example of a country without major contentious potential (Kovacic, 2011 ; Veljak, 2000), however recent examples of social movements and protests seem to show that this fact has been changing. In the last three years there has been more protests aimed to increase democratic procedures than in seventeen years before that all together. What is the most interesting is that the main actors of those contentious actions are young people. The goal of this paper is to analyze main trends in youth participation in Croatia. By comparing three meaningful actions where young people have participated in order to influence politics and society , I plan to differentiate factors and modes of civic participation of youth. This paper will give an answer on following questions: what are the ways of youth participation in Croatia ; who are the main actors ; why were those contentious actions happening at that exact time and what mechanisms were used for achieving youth’s goals. Hence, the paper will link studies on political culture and youth participation and provide an insight in the expression of values and norms of young people in Croatia. The topic is relevant because so far there has been no structured and coherent analysis of recent youth participation in Croatia, nor the comparison of contentious politics within Croatia. By understanding motives and the structure of youth protests we understand social dynamics of Croatian society and Croatian polity better.
