Sažetak
Internationalization, global learning, and global competencies in higher education are regularly discussed in the context of underrepresented students. Study abroad programs are becoming more important in preparing students to graduate with intercultural awareness and global competencies. There is a disparity regarding participating in study abroad programs between middle or upper class students and low-income students. In this paper we are presenting a case study – short-term exchange program between a Croatian and an American University. The main goal of this project is to provide students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad programs in United States and Croatia an opportunity to acquire intercultural competencies through international experience, specifically to share their research and discuss it in the international environment. The paper will analyze the following research issues: (1) The benefits of short-term exchange programs in raising intercultural competencies for international students and respective host institutions, (2) the use and impact of technology and social media in short term study abroad programs, and (3) the impact of short-term study abroad exchange programs on preparing HE institutions for enrolling a diverse student body. The evaluation of the exchange program was done by on-line questionnaires and interviews with participants. The results are interpreted in terms of project quality insurance.
