Sažetak
Introduction. The use of high-power diode laser and photo activated disinfection (PAD), have been recommended as an alternative or a supplement to existing cleaning procedures. Aim of the study. To compare the antimicrobial action of a high-power diode laser, PAD, conventional and hydrodynamic irrigation, with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), on intracanal Enterococcus faecalis (E.f.). Materials and methods. Root canals of 112 human teeth were instrumented, sterilized in plasma and contaminated with E. f.. They were randomly distributed into 6 groups: I: irradiation by 975 nm diode laser (LaserHF, 2W), II: PAD (LaserHF, 100mW), III: PAD using 3D Endoprobe (Helbo, 100 mW), IV: syringe irrigation, NaOCl, V: NaOCl activation by EndoActivator, VI: irrigation with saline. Root canals were sampled by flushing the canals before and after the procedures, serially diluted and cultured. The presence of E. f. in root canals was proven with polymerase chain reaction, and the pattern of colonization was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Results. There was significant reduction in the bacterial population for all groups (p<0.001). The 975 nm diode laser was less effective than saline in reducing colony forming units (CFUs) (p>0.05). PAD and EndoActivator were more effective in reducing CFUs than other techniques (p<0.05). Conclusion. PAD as well as NaOCl sonic agitation with EndoActivator have better antimicrobial efficacy than 975 nm diode laser, or NaOCl syringe irrigation alone.
