Sažetak
Objectives:To investigate the effects of two occlusion types on the mandibular asymmetry in childrens with mixed dentition. Materials and methods:Mandibular asymmetry measurements were performed on the panoramic radiographs of 146 childrens (77 with Class II/2 malocclusion and 69 with Class III) by method of Habets. Regarding the gender there were 61 boys and 85 girls (34 boys and 43 girls with Class II/2 and 27 boys and 42 girls with Class III). The two-way ANCOVA analysis was used to determine the effect of gender and type of malocclusion with control of dental age (Demirjan) as covariate. Results: The dental class and the combination of type of malocclusion and gender have a significant effect on the total mandibular asymmetry index. The dental class accounts for 4% and the combination of class and gender for 3.4% of variability of mandibular asymmetry. The dental age have no statistically significant effect on the total asymmetry index. The boys in Class III malocclusion groups have higher total asymmetry index value than the girls in the same group (p=0.045 ; n2=5.9%) and than the boys with Class II/2 malocclusion (p=0.008 ; n2=5.9%). There were no statistically significant differences in condylar hight asymmetry index and ramus hight asymmetry index between type of malocclusion and gender. Conclusions: The total mandibular asymmetry values was significantly more pronounced in Class III then Class II/2 malocclusions groups, expecially in boys in mixed dentition indipendent of the dental age. However, the mean mandibular asymmetry index accounts for small value of variability.
