Sažetak
Technological development offers social well-being of urban life but the price to be paid is big and grows bigger every day, proportionally to the increase of accessible nuclear, biological and chemical substances and released wastes, which in combination and interaction produce a whole range of very dangerous and toxic compounds, resulting in greenhouse gases, dioxins, heavy metals and other anthropogenic pollutants. They present serious hazards for human wellbeing and health, not only in wartime but in peace as well. Human and environmental health and safety have become an important global issue concerning almost every aspect of our everyday life. From textile point of view, functional protective clothing (civilian as well as military) and its proper uses can contribute to global safety. Functional protective clothing is required for many professionals today, such as firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, chemical and biological researchers, environmental health workers, pesticide and hazard waste handlers, soldiers etc. This clothing generally involves a respirator or dust mask, hooded jacket and trousers or one-piece coverall, gloves, and overboots, individually or together in an ensemble. Choices must be made as to which items of protective clothing to select for a given situation or environment. A number of variables to be considered include weight, comfort, level of protection, and the duration of protection required. In addition, the types of challenge to be encountered are of significant consideration. Due to the large number of variables involved, a spectrum of functional protective clothing and clothing systems have already been developed although research in this area still continues, since every part of such protective clothing system has to fulfill appropriate standards. The degree of protection, resistance to abrasion and/or puncture, flammability, time and degree of basic properties loss as well as ways of maintenance and storages are included in these standards, as is done in the EU Directive 2000/54EC and standard EN 14126:2003 for protective equipment (including clothes) against infective agents – bacterial, viruses and other microorganisms.
