Sažetak
Purpose: Selective vaccination of adolscents in two secondary schools (medical and nautical) in Zadar, Croatia is planned. Evaluation of adolescents' knowledge, attitudes and perceived risk of hepatitis B in prea-vaccination era was conducted.
Methods: In the school year 1998-1999 a total of 1050 respondents (age 13-19) in two seaports towns in Croatia, zadar and Rijeka with 100000 and 200000 inhabitants respectively, were administered a questionnaire. In medical schools 695 (66%) adolescents were examined and in nautical schools 355 (34%). Also, in Zadar their pre-vaccination blood samples were drawn to test fro the presence of anti-HBc antibodies.
Results: Adolescents had very little knowledge about hepatitis: only 63% of them knew what hepatitis is, while 57% answered that hepatitis B can be transmitted by sexual contact with infected person. 15% examined adolescents had multiple sexual contacts and 23% of them used condom. There was no significant difference in adolescents' knowledge between the age-stratified groups and between towns examined. Adolescents of medical schools obtained some better knowledge.
Conclusion: This survey showed that there is an obvious and urgent need for an intensive education of adolescents about their target disease hepatitis B, before implementation of vaccination programme.
