Sažetak
The paper analyses the present situation concerning waste management in Opatija Riviera, specifying the data and required standard, and provides feasible transitional and final solutions for collection and treatment of municipal waste, in line with the principles of sustainable development, on the basis of new scientific knowledge and modern European practice. Switching to the tariff system based on the "polluter pays" principle must, in present circumstances, proceed gradually, but in a clearly targeted manner, so that unprepared clients or municipal services are not confronted with the high price of the companies service, or that high costs of operation are accompanied with low fee collection rate. The author is of the opinion that the most environmentally-friendly method for reducing the content of biodegradable fraction in residual waste and thus reducing the impact of waste, is the mechanical-biological treatment.
