Sažetak
Small-scale collection, treatment and reuse of wastewater and organic waste directly at the source of production is an ecologically and economically reasonable concept for the future. The historical development of wastewater treatment technology has led to an ever-expanding sequence of treatment plants. Since installation of a multitude of transportation pipes would be not feasible, the reactors designed for the production of useful and marketable products should be located close to the place where wastewater is generated. This leads directly to decentralization of wastewater treatment systems. In order to preserve environment for the future the community should strive to introduce novel technological solutions in the old wastewater treatment concept which proved not to be environmental-friendly at all. the task is difficult and demanding. In author's opinion the decentralized concept should be widely applied in Croatia that is not densely populated, suffers from water scarcity in some areas, must improve its energy efficiency and has precious natural resources to be preserved.
