Sažetak
The aim of the study was to determine the species composition and abundance of benthic marine diatoms in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sediment samples were taken from one station (N 42° 54' 58.7" E 17° 36' 17.6") at 1 and 8 m depths during autumn 2011. Samples were fixed in a 4% formalin solution and prepared for investigation by cleaning frustules using the method described by Hustedt (1930). In total, 400 valves per sample were counted. Examination, identification and counting of benthic diatoms were carried out using the oil immersion lens (100 x) of the Microstar binocular microscope, AO Scientific Instruments. Samples were also studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. Photomicrographs were taken for the majority of taxa. Altogether, 80 taxa included in 34 genera were determined. The largest number of taxa were found within the genera Mastogloia (14), Nitzschia (9), Diploneis (8) and Amphora (7). Regarding depths, 63 diatom taxa were identified at 1 m and 43 taxa at 8 m. Sörensen similarity index between two samples was 51%. The most abundant taxa were Actinocyclus subtilis (W. Gregory) Ralfs (13.6 %) and Licmophora sp. (8.6 %) at 1 m, and Nitzschia pararostrata (Lange-Bertalot) Lange-Bertalot and Caloneis excentrica (Grunow) Boyer (12.6 %) at 8 m. Trachineis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve was present in both samples (6.3 % at 1 m and 8.1 % at 8 m).The presented findings contribute to an essential base-line information of littoral marine diatom zonation for future studies.
