Sažetak
The increasing demand for seafood and a stagnation of the worldwide capture fisheries create pressure on aquaculture to fill the widening gap between the demand and supply. Aquaculture is already providing 50% of the aquatic food we consume. Seafood makes an important part of the healthy Mediterranean diet. Capture fisheries is suffering from diminishing catches, undersized fish, severe bottom impact, low profitability and rising fuel costs. By adjusting fleets to fishing possibilities and by adopting and implementing responsible management, the fisheries sector may reduce significantly impact on marine ecosystem and biodiversity in the Mediterranean. The aquaculture industry in the Mediterranean must search for new, innovative and responsible techniques, practices and management. New strategies have to be developed, notably integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and multifunctional use of marine and coastal areas, in the global frame of integrated coastal zone management Professional networking should be promoted and supported at all levels (scientists, public, decision makers…) to help the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture. Above all, networks like SIPAM and the ongoing GFCM initiatives on the regulation, monitoring, zoning for aquaculture, quality standards… But new European visions and Mediterranean dialog are needed to strengthen existing regional networks and to harmonize initiatives and activities at national and international levels. GID network could be one of these relevant networks of open minded scientists and decision makers.
