Sažetak
This paper will examine the extent to which individual ideological self-placement is related to issue preferences. Spatial models of issue voting (e.g. Downs 1957) normally assume citizens' ideological positions to be exogenous to parties' positions on issues. Although this assumption has been questioned in the literature (see Inglehart & Klingemann 1976), a systematic check of parties' influence on individuals' self positioning has not been conducted so far. In this paper we test whether individual self placement is influenced by the level of emphasis parties put on different issues at the country level. To test our hypothesis, we will use the data collected from the PIREDEU project in 2009, including voters' surveys, experts' surveys and party manifestos in 27 European countries.
