Sažetak
Adriatic Sea as a part of the Mediterranean is predominantly oligotrophic, due to its morphological and hydrodynamic characteristics. However, the northern part of the Adriatic Sea is quite shallow and one of the most productive parts of the Mediterranean, mainly related to substantial freshwater inflow through Po River. The western part of the northern Adriatic exhibits some eutrophic characteristics, recurrent algal blooms, hypoxia and from time to time even anoxia. To assess these problems we apply a machine learning algorithm for induction of regression trees models. The algorithm was applied on a substantial data set to construct models that would (1) explain the dynamics of phytoplankton concentration in the northern Adriatic as a result of the independent environmental variables, and (2) explain the dynamic relationships between the phytoplankton and nitrogen-to-phosphorus and nitrogen-to-silica ratios respectively. The data set comprised physical, chemical, and biological parameters, measured at six stations on the profile from Po River delta to Rovinj on the Croatian coast and river Po inflows. Water columns were sampled at 0.3, 5, 10, and 20 meters, and at 2.5 meters off the bottom, from 1972 with at least monthly frequency. Preliminary results indicate that there was a change in the phytoplankton dynamics after year 1997: before, the blooms were limited by temperature and phosphorus, after 1997 salinity became an important factor. The salinity is the main signal indicating a decrease in the freshwater flow to the area, which results in lower concentrations of phytoplankton after 1997. The model shows also that after 2002 we observe higher N/P ratio. Before 2002 the ratio was influenced by temp, diatoms, and salinity. Future work will be focused on building predictive models for phytoplankton blooms, which can be used to control the different activities in the contributing areas.
