Sažetak
The purpose of presentation is to examine the question of spatial images and regional identities, as well as the concept of Otherness in multicultural realities of the early modern Croatian borderlands. This is the period of frequent changes of borders between three imperial systems with different religious systems and cultural traditions that have met on the Croatian territory. Habsburg Monarchy, Ottoman Empire and Venetian Republic reflected meeting of Western and Eastern world, Christianity and Islam as well as continental and maritime traditions and lifestyles. The question is how such a multicultural surrounding affected the formation and change of spatial images, concepts and regional identities. Research is based on the analysis of the symbolic layer of the maps, i.e. place-names of the given period. Maps are considered as social construction, as images and conveyors of common societal and cultural values. Place-names, as map elements, are the strongest exponents of prevailing cultural and spatial images. Analysis of place-names enabled to trace the impact of social, political and cultural circumstances on the perception and formation of regional identities. Map analysis revealed the differentiation and appreciation of social groups and opened concepts of Other and Otherness in the condition of multicultural realities of early modern Croatian borderlands. Notions of uniqueness, Otherness and territorialization are guidelines of formation and change of regional identities.
