Sažetak
Introduction: A new contact ultrasonic probe was made (1.6 mm in diameter), and its effect was studied on 120 rats brain.
Methods: We have applied ultrasonic energy of this probe on Wistar rats cortex and subcortial matter in frontoparietal region. Different power and duration of ultrasonic energy have been used. The animals have been sacrified in different period after surgery. Light microscopy and electron microscopy were than applied.
Results: A three different zones of changed brain tissue have been found: dezintegration zone immediatelly around ultrasonic probe; termic lesion zone and zone of micromolecular structures lesion (ER, mitochondria, nucleus membrane, lisosoms). All of these lesions depends lineary of applied ultrasonic energy power as well as time of exposition.
Conclusion: Contact ultrasonic probe caused minimal lesion of surrounding brain tissue. A small zone of microstructural disturbances. Therefore, contact ultrasonic probe seems to be an useful instruments for endoscopically assisted neurosurgery (e.g. third ventriculostomy). Our further intention is going to this contact ultrasonic probe in clinical investigations.
