Sažetak
Modern democracies are in fact only those democracies that allow (do they demand it – that's a different story) comprehensive participation of all citizens of age. How should we evaluate these democracies in the context of such a large scale absence of women in politics? Can or should we call them democracies at all? At the same time all of these «old, developed democracies» are rooted in the liberal concept of a social contract which, as was well proved by Carole Pateman, is indeed a sexual contract that prohibits women's participation in the public sphere. If women have not yet achieved their status of citizens because of their absence from politics in those societies, how should we evaluate the post-communist countries that were, in the begining of the '90s, rapidly embarking the «patriarchal renaissance»? These questions will be used as guidelines in the effort to illuminate today's status of women in Croatia.
