Sažetak
Encounters of various cultures in the contemporary world take place almost every second in the most diversified forms of communication. The development of a relationship towards the culturally different is becoming a key factor of confrontation with inevitable changes caused by the transition of unique mono-cultural into culturally plural communities. Inter-contacts of different culture members here mean the necessity of a quality co-relationship based on the idea of interculturalism that appears as a possible solution to quality coexistence in contemporary multicultural societies. The concept of contemporary interculturalism proceeds from the intercultural idea as linking up people of different races, ethnicities, cultures and religions. Its aims are directed towards the adoption of the basic concepts in the field of culture and understanding of the manners of culturally plural community functioning. Faced with the consequences of mass migration on the global level, educational institutions are becoming the meeting-place of different cultures, due to which the need appears for integrating intercultural principles into educational systems of a growing number of European and world countries. Intercultural education, therefore, implies the need for a new approach to the creation of a curriculum by introducing new contents and innovative forms of work, while the development of the teacher’s intercultural competence as moderator of intercultural relationships represents a significant component in his life-long education adapted to the needs and demands of contemporary multicultural societies.
