Sažetak
To put it briefly, in the past, Glagolitic singing was the singing of the GLAGOLJAŠI (priests and clergymen who used Glagoligic liturgy) of the Western church liturgy in the Church Slavic language, but in time it also comprised singing of the laymen in the vernacular of tunes revealing elements of the Gregorian chorale, remains of the Byzantine and Aquileian liturgical singing as well as the influence of the world's musical folklore. Very little of this music was noted down, to begin with a rare example from 1564 (along with the glagolitic anthology from 1556, Archive HAZU, IV a 47), while by far the majority of it is conserved on tape recordings, considering that this musical structure survives chiefly in oral tradition. Since the first decade of this century, experts have been dealing with a more systematic notation, tape recording and transcribing chants into notes. Their work is followed closely and with particular care by the first serious studies of glagolitic singing. A thorough preparing and filing of the recordings as well as their cataloguing have been under the charge of the Old Slavic Institute in Zagreb since 1954, alongside the other smaller, though no less worthy, collevtions in Zagreb, Zadar and elsewhere, while HAZU takes care of the scientific research and the publication of the Spomenik glagoljaškog pjevanja (Document of glagolitic chants).
