Sažetak
Although regional economic integrations are developing all over the world for a longer period of time, the issue of monitoring represents rather new activity. Monitoring enables gathering of more precise information about the depth of certain integration processes. Regional economic integration theory states that better monitoring increases the level of the effectiveness of integration policies as well as the level of the transparency of the integration processes. Since there is obviously a trend of deepening regional integration in the sense of the so called new regionalism, regional or supranational level became even more significant. Many regional trade agreements among developing countries failed to achieve expected results and one of the most important reasons for these failures is considered to be the implementation of common obligations in the integration. One of the main purposes of monitoring is to ensure the implementation of the agreed obligations and that is why monitoring is very important for the successful functioning of regional economic integrations. This paper analyses main features, institutional framework, problems and perspectives of monitoring within regional economic integrations today on the case of the EU, the integration which is considered to be the best example of the successful deep regional economic integration and which represents the pattern of the development for many other regional economic integrations in the world.
