Sažetak
In Croatia, entomological studies on phlebotomine sand flies are very rare. The only one available in the literature is that of Zivkovic and Z. Miscevic (Acta Parasitol Jug, 1: 107-116, 1970) in the costal area of the country. Sand flies were found in seventeen out of twenty-seven localities investigated in middle and southern part of Dalmatian territory until Trogir. Five species belonging to Phlebotomus genus were identified [P. papatasi, P. neglectus (former P. major), P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi)] and one to Sergentomyia genus (S. minuta). The authors concluded that P. neglectus and P. tobbi could have played a role on the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in the foci investigated. We report in the present note the results of two year investigation (2002-2003) carried out in some foci of southern Croatia in the frame of bluetongue surveillance. Sand fly specimens identified on this study were from the entomological studies carried out for monitoring the presence of Culicoides midges. Insects were trapped using a 220V ultraviolet down-draught light trap with 8W black-light tube placed near to domesticated animals and operating before dusk until after dawn. A total of 2, 599 sand flies were collected from 6 different localities of the country: Molunat, Brsecine, Komolac, Pridvorje, Runovic and Zastrazisce. In particular, one single black light-trap operating each night from the second July until 25 October 2003 in the island of Hvar (Zastrazisce), produced the majority of sand flies identified (2, 339). The maximum number of sand flies (110) was caught during the first week of September. The weekly average varied between 5.4 and 60.4, being the peak registered at the end of July and the minimum during the last week of September. Five species were identified of which four were belonging to Phlebotomus genus [P. tobbi (18.8%), P. neglectus (18.3%), P. perfiliewi (11.0%), P. mascittii (0.01%)] and one to Sergentomyia genus [S. minuta (51.6%)]. The data of the present study highlights that also black light traps can be a useful tool for monitoring phlebotomine sand flies.
