Sažetak
The ever increasing demands at work and at home make us aware of the need for a good rest, especially for a good sleep. A tired body can hardly respond to the everyday demands. Hence furniture design has become increasingly focused on its main function – to provide quality rest, or work, devoid of unnecessary strain. To achieve this, an interdisciplinary approach to issues emerges as the best way, involving professionals from the field of technical sciences and from a number of medical disciplines. Orthopaedics, which deals with the locomotor system, should give insights into the specific nature of our bone system, so that these insights could be transferred clearly into the language of technical sciences and for purposes of furniture design. Besides, the issue of adjustments to specific demands of each individual should be solved as well. Again, it is the task of orthopaedics to define the individual deviations, so that they may be responded appropriately, bearing in mind an efficient manufacture of furniture. The paper describes the anatomic features of the locomotor parts to be considered in the process of furniture design, with an emphasis on the most common mistakes made when selecting office furniture. Also, a discussion of common pathological changes of the locomotor system brings to light the need to carefully choose furniture, as bad health could further be deteriorated by unphysiological strain.
