Sažetak
This paper reports on the development of scales for measuring individual differences in empathic ability of adolescents, along with evidence for their reliability and validity. Item analytic procedure was used in preliminary study to reduce an initial pool of 57 Likert scale items. The reduced set of 37 items was applied on a sample of high school students aged 14-16 years (N=311) and on a sample of adolescents of the same age (N=223) for the purpose of cross validation. Based on principal component factor analyses and item analyses results two scales were developed: a 19-item Emotional Empathy Scale and short, 6-item Fantasy Scale. The findings indicate that both scales are sufficiently reliable to warrant additional use with adolescent population. Validity assessment was begun by correlating scores on the Emotional Empathy Scale and Fantasy Scale (sample 1, N=311) with measures of intelectual ability, prosocial behaviour and social desirability. Both scales displayed different patterns of relationships with these measures, which support the notion that they are measuring different aspects of empathy. Results are discussed in relation with definitions and theories which stress either emotional or cognitive facets of empathy.
