Sažetak
With the aim of investigating the influence of the post-socialist transitional changes on the cultural landscapes, this paper deals specifically with the experience of Zagreb. Landscapes are understood both as means of ideological manipulation and the bearers of symbols which indicate specific cultural processes. The process of cultural transition leaves behind various types of signs in landscapes, the most obvious and visible signs of which are brought about by the centres of political power. These are the renaming of streets and squares, (de)installation of monuments and the renovation of (currently) important old architectural objects. Such changes are a result of the revision and reinterpretation of national history and reveal the shift in the official ideology as well as an intention to use the landscape as a means of ideological assurance. The second type of signs of transition in the landscape is connected with the side effect of transition. Along with the opening to the West came the invasion of the elements of globalization. The reaction to the cultural globalization superimposed on a reaction to the former cultural suppression. Together they caused increased manifestation of national culture. As a result the signs of national identification: folklore, national ornaments and symbols are now the usual elements of the various indoor and outdoor cultural landscapes, from classrooms to streets. The third type of signs in the landscapes discussing in the paper is anonymous inscriptions - graffiti. As a voice of unofficial attitudes and values, graffiti uncovers more hidden cultural particularities of transition. If the graffiti can be regarded as a barometer of the cultural atmosphere in Zagreb in the late 1990ies, then its main elements appear to be irony towards politicians and their actions and lack of the tolerance towards the Other.
