Sažetak
Focus of the presentation is on two basic themes. The first part of the presentation deals with the “Negative Other” as a reference point in the identity building under conditions of post-socialist change. Starting from the view that identities are relational author discusses Croatia’s defining “notnesses”, i.e. how Croatia in post-socialist period defined its identity though not-belonging and who represented “the Other” in negative re¬la¬tion to whom the construction of post-socialist Croatian identity developed. The second part of the presentation deals with the re-evaluation of the country’s own pasts. Identity building is closely linked with the politics of heritage. Public heritage is selected and involves choices as a part of policy. Author examines what past layers has been chosen in post-socialist Croatia as a cultural heritage and what heritage has been rejected and excluded. The reshaping of urban landscape by changing street names and replacing or setting up memorials visibly indicates what is canonized by the political option in power. Controversies connected with the history of World War II and post-war period and admitting into public sphere previously silenced discourses about World War II mark public space in Croatia today.
