Sažetak
The article gives an overview of the relationship between culture and ethnicity from the aspect of geography. On the basis of cultural landscapes made up of the traces which human communities have left behind them in various regions, cultural geography traditionally drew the borders between diverse cultural worlds. The different stances and the dilemmas connected with identification of such cultural borders with ethnic borders are pointed out. Contemporary geography has been more oriented in recent decades towards group rather than regional differentiation, and it does not observe ethnic differences as an element of regional, but rather of group cultural differentiation i.e. as an element in the multicultural nature of a particular region. Interpretation of the complex polyphonic landscapes of today's cities makes it possible among a multitude of signs and symbols interwoven in a unique text/landscape to separate, among other signs, the signs/symbols of ethnicity – from graffiti to monumental structures. The visibility of the ethnies in city areas i.e. the creation of separate territories with a characteristic landscape, causes a stance towards minority ethnic groups as towards deviant groups which shatter the integrity of the dominant population ; consequently, shaping of one's own ethnic cultural landscape is one of the possible factors in ethnic conflict situations in the cities.
