Sažetak
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is, in most cases, a mild disease, but approximately 20% of patients have severe disease with systemic and local complications and high mortality. Early identification of such patients is critical because timely treatment reduces morbidity and mortality but remains one of the major problems in practice. Cell-free (circulating) DNA in serum and plasma has been investigated as a diagnostic tool in chronic diseases and is already applied in prenatal diagnostics. To confirm the value of this new potential marker and test its practical usage, we quantified circulating DNA in both serum and plasma samples of a larger and unselected population of AP patients. Our results suggest that DNA quantification could be used as an early marker of severity in AP. The growing availability of the methods for DNA quantification could make this new marker for predicting severity of pancreatitis widely used in practice.
