Sažetak
In the last two decades, Croatia undergone thorough transitional changes and also suffered the atrocities of the devastating war. These events brought vast socioeconomic, political and cultural changes that affected every aspect of the people’s lives. These changes also affected the overall health policies and with it the mental health care system. Here we provide an overview of the current situation in the mental health services, policies and legislation, and an overview of the current workforce, educational and scientific issues in the Croatian psychiatry. We specifically described the most important initiatives for the improvement of the overall mental health care in Croatia in the last two decades. In the beginning a short introduction with basic facts of the Croatian geography, history, population and socio-demographics are described to provide the reader with a wider frame.
