Sažetak
Finding a way to identify metaphors in texts has been a major issue in metaphor research. Various linguists have tried different approaches, including using various types of metaphoricity signals. By finding a way to easily and automatically find metaphors in a corpus would allow us to research it better. This paper examines whether the grammatical construction noun of the noun and the lexical construction with literally are a reliable way of identifying metaphor. All the examples used are from the British National Corpus. A semantic analysis of the of the first construction shows that only a small number of constructions with literally is metaphorical. The analysis of the second construction also shows a small number of metaphorical examples. Based on these findings we can confirm that these two constructions are not a reliable way of identifying metaphor. It seems that a lexical or a grammatical construction cannot be a reliable metaphoricity signal because of polysemy (in the case of the lexical construction) and the specific meanings of the items (in the case of the grammatical construction). Therefore, it remains uncertain whether a simple lexical or grammatical method such as the one employed here would be effective in metaphor detection.
