Sažetak
Durability of a structure is defined as its ability to preserve functionality, stability and aesthetic properties under expected environmental influences without larger maintenance and repair costs during designed service life. With the requirements of 100-year design service life for major bridge structures and enormous rehabilitation and repair costs associated with inability to satisfy these requirements, durability of civil engineering structures is today one of the key problems of structures worldwide. In this paper two main levels of durability design are presented: prescriptive and performance-based design. Prescriptive durability design is based on set of empirical rules, which need to be followed to assure required service life. The major difficulty with prescriptive design lays in the compliance procedure, since it is almost impossible to perform effective control of most of the prescribed limiting values. Performance-based design is based on durability indicators, which are prescribed in the design phase, tested during prequalification testing, used in service life models and tested during construction as a part of quality control on site.
