Sažetak
This paper provides basic indices of road traffic system of the city of Rijeka. It also indicates fundamental characteristics of the existing system of the Automatic Traffic Management (ATM) within the city of Rijeka and potential improvements Directional parking-garage system (DPFS) might bring to city traffic systems. By integrating the DPFS into the ATM system and providing quality information for a direct leading of drivers to a free parking lot, the amount of traffic related to searching for free parking lots is significantly reduced and this integration also ensures more quality information input for automatic traffic management algorithms. The infrastructure of the existing ATM system can be used for the implementation of the directional system and certain tools and services (working stations, SMS alarming, statistics, etc.) can also be used in the integrated manner. This will result in a more efficient traffic management, in improved monitoring, management and optimisation in the traffic system along with a simpler and cheaper system maintenance and with minimalisation of investments. Particular significance during the implementation of the DPFS into traffic systems of cities should be given to providing reliable functioning of the system and to ensuring good layout and easy comprehensibility of the installed traffic signage. It has been estimated that directioning the traffic from starting/arrival points towards free parking locations within the city centre will cause a decrease of 10-15% in «idle» driving of passenger cars.
