Sažetak
Historically, retail was an industry oriented on local market aiming to distribute goods to consumers at a narrow geographical area. Internationalization of retail operation started with global sourcing. Till 1990s, both in theory and in practice, retail internationalization was explained as a process driven mainly by saturation on domestic market and perceived opportunity of growth by seizing foreign markets. That means that a reactive approach to the retail internationalization took the place. Since 1990s till nowadays research studies showed that pull factors (such as: growth prospects, niche opportunities, lower legal barriers, tax benefits, comparative advantage in processes etc) are becoming more and more important. While there is a plenty of papers discussing the conceptual framework of the retail internationalization, there is a scarcity of publications analyzing the present state of reached internationalization level and state of the art at specific geographic markets. In this paper Croatian and Polish markets will be analyzed and compared in order to explain paths and drivers of retail internationalization in these countries. In addition, the impact of the retail internationalization process on national economies will be explained.
