Sažetak
Timely identification of obesity, in children remains the crucial initial step in the prevention and management of obesity and co-morbidities. We aimed to examine whether weight velocity from birth to 12 months is associated with body mass index (BMI), waist (WC) and hip circumference (HC).Children at the age 4-14 years from town Trogir in Southern Croatia were included in this case-control study. Children were controlled for weight, height, (WC) and (HC). Prospective measures were obtained at birth, then at the age of 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, and afterwards twice a year during childhood. Obesity was defined according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF).Out of 1358 children included in the study, there were 76 (5.6%) obese children (36 girls). Weight velocity form birth to 1 mo was correlated with BMI (P=0.045) ; from birth to 6 mo with BMI (P=0.012), WC (P=0.033), WH (P=0.025) ; from birth to 9 mo with BMI (P=0.018), WH (P=0.026) ; from birth to 12 mo with BMI (P=0.031). The results of this study show that infant weight gain from birth to 6 mo can be used as a significant predictor of BMI, WC and WH among obese children.
