Sažetak
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential application of the comet assay on haemocytes of zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha Pall. for genotoxicity monitoring of freshwater environment. Zebra mussels were exposed for seven days to different concentrations (10, 80, 100 and 150 mg/l) of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and for one month in the River Sava, downstream from the municipal waste discharge of Zagreb town. The comet assay was conducted as described by Singh et al (1988) with slight modifications. Statisticaly significant increase in DNA single strand breakes was observed after exposure to 80, 100 and 150 mg/l of PCP and after exposure in the River Sava as well. Our study confirmed that the comet assay applied on zebra mussel haemocytes is very valuable in biomonitoring studies for determining the potential genotoxicity of water pollutants.
