Sažetak
The capacity of zinc to induce metallothionein in the cells of intestinal mucosa (iMT) was studied with a newly developed idiorrhythmic experimental feeding model. In contrast to the conventional dose-response feeding model the idiorrhythmic model controls for the effect of dose-rate of the nutrient intake (Momčilović 1995). It was found that the higher the Zn dose-time equivalent modulo the greater the induction capacity of iMT by Zn. Also, the inductive capacity of iMT by zinc increased proportionally with the progression of the idiorrhythms within each individual modulo sequence. Thus, less Zn is required to induce iMT if somebody is of lower Zn nutritional status and has a smaller Zn metabolic pool then if somebody is of better Zn nutritional status and has a larger Zn metabolic pool. The review of recent controversy on the international intermittent iron supplementation program showed that without idiorrhythmic control for the effect of the dose-rate it is not possible to meaningfully compare the groups within and between the variouis iron supplementation studies, respectivly.
