Sažetak
Data gathered by relevant international research proved that mentoring, whether formal in its origins or not, provided by experienced colleague scientist plays the key role in young researcher's successful gaining of a PhD and induction in his own disciplinary community. Mentoring relationship defined as informal transfer of knowledge, social capital and psychosocial support, perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, carrier and professional development (Bozeman and Feeney, 2007), isn’t necessarily developing within a frame of a formal, compulsory, institutionally based supervision. However, recent research argues that such formal supervision is too often the only opportunity for provision of any mentoring for inexperienced researchers. In Croatian science system, the socialization of young scientists occurs within the formal 'scientific novice' program in period of six years during which young scientist works on a project lead by much experienced researcher. In the mentioned setting, the scientist - project manager is also the supervisor of young novice's professional socialization, if not necessarily also of his/hers doctoral dissertation. If the formal supervision doesn't automatically create mentoring relationship, but only its opportunity, development of such remains an interesting empirical issue. Scarce and exclusively quantitative research that dealt only incidentally with the role of mentoring within the context of the Croatian scientific system, gathered evidence of mentor's detrimental impact on novice's productivity and successful and rapid completion of original postgraduate research. This paper deals with the empirical questions of occurrence of formal and informal mentoring relationships during process of young scientists’ professional socialization and the role of qualitative methodology in possible research answers.
