Sažetak
The 21st century witnesses intensive application of new techniques in fabric joining, so that the conventional technique of joining fabric pieces by sewing is faced with numerous innovative competitors that change considerably the area of garment manufacture, and textiles in general. Contemporary joining techniques offer quite adequate possibilities of joining new and demanding high performance materials, utter change in the seam visual identity and achieving selected properties of end-use products, such as breathability, waterproofing, reduce drag etc. However, a comprehensive knowledge is necessary to implement the new joining techniques successfully, primarily in the fields of material science and machine construction together with the notion of the importance of introducing the systems of objective measurement and evaluating the quality of new welds. Objective evaluation means performance, conditions, and properties. Although every seam analysis begins with checking its basic properties, different seams mean different requirements that should be met, relating to their application and function. The following chapter deals with contemporary methods of joining textiles, and is aimed at defining the differences between welded joints, and systemizing the knowledge in the field. The final purpose is to define key factors of the necessary and possible future research directions in the field.
