Sažetak
We show that the repulsive interaction between molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces can be explained by the lateral relaxation of the surrounding surface atoms. The adsorption CO on Pt(111) (R.Brako and D.Sokcevic, Adsorbate Interactions of CO Chemisorbed on Pt(111), Surface Science 401, to appear) and on Ni(111) are discussed in detail. Quantitative agreement with pair interaction energies deduced from experiment and with experimental data on adsorbate-induced surface stress is obtained. These results provide new insight into potential energy surfaces of chemisorbed species on metal surfaces.
