Sažetak
Introduction. There is a great fluctuation in employment of young assistant teachers on Departments of Physiology at Medical faculties in Croatia, especially medical doctors. It is common that, after spending few years at Department of Physiology, they move to Clinical Departments, looking for a clinical specialization. This is due to the poor scientific perspective (small grants, poor equipment), significantly lower salary than at Clinical Departments, and, generally, their reputation (prestige) is lower. To strengthen the positions of young assistant teachers I propose that they pass exams and get the License for teaching in Physiology. Materials and Methods. License Exams in Physiology would consist of general knowledge in Physiology (MCQ according 3-4 most known textbooks of physiology), several recent reviews of post propulsive areas of physiology, knowledge and performance of most used physiological exercises. It may include the attending the courses in analyzing of experimental data, basic statistics, biophysics etc. The exams will be organized and performed by special board of senior physiologists within Croatian Society of Physiologists. Results. It is expected that passing exam and get License for teaching in Physiology will improve status young associates for several reasons: 1)They get license (diploma) for teaching in physiology, and with other qualifications give them the advantage over the candidates which may have even more scientific publications, but have not knowledge of general physiology and experience in teaching process. 2)This will “force” young associates to study and learn all important principles of general Physiology. This may be especially important for assistant teachers at Departments of Physiology which have not graduated at Faculty of Medicine (i.e. they are not MDs) 3)Croatian Society of Physiologists should urge at level of Faculty, University and Ministry of Science and Education to recognize this qualification and to increase the salary to young assistants.
