Sažetak
Analysis of plankton samples from 1993 to 2009 in the coastal South Adriatic Sea outlined changes in the species composition and noticeable variations in the abundance of dominant cnidarian species. These changes appear to be associated wit the Ionian cyclonic or anticyclonic circulation ; the alternate advection of saltier water from the Aegean/Levantine basin or less saline water of Atlantic origin modifies thermohaline properties of the Adriatic Sea. Two new incoming species in the Adriatic Sea are calycophora Muggiaea atlantica and hydromedusa Niobia dendrotentaculata. Muggiaea atlantica, a typical species of less saline Atlantic waters, was registered for the first time in 1995. This species is now well established in the Adriatic Sea and its progressive dominance over autochthonous M. kochi was confirmed throughout the period from 1996 to 1999 and from 2006 to 2008. Niobia dendrotentaculata, a tropical Atlantic originating species, after its first record in the Adriatic in 2001, again occured in August 2006 and reached 44% of total hydromedusan abundance.
