Sažetak
Background and purpose. One of the most intriguing global issues in the past decades relates to climate change mitigation meas ures and climate change processes caused by increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Industrialisation and urbanisation, which developed particularly rapidly after the Second World War, are responsible for growing concentrations of carbon dioxide (C02) in the atmosphere. Forests and trees are complex ecosystems ; in comparison with other ecosystems on Earth, they are important natural 'carbon sinks' and high capacity 'carbon pools' for atmospheric carbon dioxide. Beech stands play a significant role in the mentioned carbon sequestration process due to the dominant share of beech growing stock in the growing stock of Croatian and European forests. The purpose of this paper is to test the assumption that between two beech stands of similar structural elements and environmental conditions, of which one has been managed on the principles of sustainability and the other on the close-to-nature principle in the last several decades, there is a significant difference in carbon sequestered in woody biomass. This is tested within a few simulated felling cycles. Material and methods. The study area is represented by two mixed beech-fir stands located in the region of Gorski Kotar. Both stands are uneven-aged Dinaric beech-fir forest (As. Omphalodo-Fagetum) Tregubov 1957/ Marinček et al. 1993) with similar structural elements. One represents a regularly managed stand and the other represents a stand in "Risnjak" National Park, in which the forests are allowed to regenerate naturally. Each stand contains a permanent experimental plot 100x100 m, where the measurements were carried out. The method applied in this research consists of ; a) dendrometric measurements in the experimental plots ; b) calculation of woody biomass according to the aboveground tree components ; c) simulation of carbon sequestration in aboveground woody biomass through felling cycles using C02Fix model ; d) testing the simulation results. Results. Generally, the results show that the biomass and carbon content of aboveground tree components is in accordance with volume allocation of the components and tree species morphology. These results were used as input data to obtain the results of carbon sequestration simulation. These results are affected by current annual stem volume increment, the intensity of selective cutting, tree mortality and competitiveness, depending on whether or not the stand is managed. The assumption was later tested by means of simulation results, and the findings were elaborated. Conclusion. In view of the results, similar research could be conducted in other strictly protected forest communities and in all components of a forest stand (belowground woody biomass, soil, aboveground dead wood) with the purpose of confirming the above assumption. This would provide interesting material for the dialogue between nature protectionists and forest managers.
