Sažetak
The purpose of this paper is to report on findings of a study carried out among fifth year students of Spanish at the University of Zagreb. They all have Croatian as L1, English, German or Italian as L2 and L3 and Spanish as L4. However, after becoming the students' major, Spanish increased in importance and became the dominant foreign language. The aim of the study was to determine the effect such a shift had on the students' use of L2 and L3 with special regard to reading. A questionnaire was administered to collect data on the students' language learning background, attitudes towards reading in foreign languages, perceived reading competence and reading habits. A semi-structured interview was carried out to provide a deeper understanding of the motivation for reading in foreign languages. The paper will present the results of the study revealing the factors which influence the maintenance or the loss of the students' reading skills in respective languages. The findings will be discussed and suggestions for further investigation will be given.
