Sažetak
The Eurasian Griffon in Croatia breeds on island cliffs at the northernmost border of the species’ distribution. In 1990 a program of ringing and wing marking started, and during eight years (1990-1997) 195 birds have been marked, 108 individuals were recovered (recovery rate of 55,4%) with the total of 315 re-sightings/recoveries. We found that all juvenile birds left their breeding colonies by the end of September of their first year, and there are no juvenile, immature or subadult Griffons on the Island. They came back when mature. We found that their migrational routes, when using two main directions: NW (to the Austrian and Italian Alps, than Spain?) and SE (to southern Italy, Balkans, Greece, Israel and as far south as Chad in central Africa and than, maybe, also to Spain) are repeated every year, with the same timing. The flight of 3.750 km made by wing-tagged Griffon Leđni Zlajo who traveled from Croatia to Chad is the furthest-known distance traveled by Griffons on migration. So, although their circular movements are very complex, the conclusion could be that it definitely is not dispersal, or irregular nomadism but some kind of regular migration taken by juvenile, immature and subadult birds until maturity. As a species the Eurasian Griffon should no longer be considered a sedentary or partially migrant bird, but a long distance migrant, where only non-breeding birds migrate, and their migration is complex, still not clear enough and lasts five or six years.
