Sažetak
Talking about clergy’s immorality here, we are focused in the first place on the ‘little sins’ of priests who lived within their parochial communities: gambling, trade, fights, stealing, visiting pubs, drinking and in particularly living with women and having illegitimate children. Those kinds of irregularities can be found almost everywhere in Catholic Europe and was more or less tolerated to a certain point. On a higher level the theologians and church fathers were having great discussions about keeping this mainly Augustinian’s doctrine of strict celibacy for the priest and the strict control of sexuality even for lay people. After the conclusion of the Tridentine Council in late 1563 the final orders of the Canon Law were made and there were no excuses for any irregularities. The Roman-Catholic Church took the rout of building up a new kind of priesthood. They have to be the intellectual and moral leaders of their laity, real ‘pastors of their flock’ and their celibacy was an inevitable condition . This was a huge task which included very complex actions on the ground. The major duty of the Roman-Catholic Reform fell on the shoulders of bishops . To help and control the implementation of the Rules, Pope Pius V (1566-1572) and Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585) sent their delegated bishops throughout Catholic countries .
