Sažetak
Today the occurrence of dental erosions in human teeth as a pathologic finding is more and more often. Depending on the degree, the erosions may have very adverse effects, in particular if generalised. The handbook „Dental erosion“ of Quintessence series Quintessentials of dental practise in five systematically written chapters gives new understanding and knowledge of the aetiology and management of dental erosions. First chapter details about the nature and prevalence of dental erosions in relation to other forms of tooth surface loss, abrasion and attrition. Dental erosions may be defined as loss of enamel and dentine from chemical attack other than those chemicals produced intraoraly by bacteria. Second chapter discusses in detail the factors that increase the risk of the development of the dental erosion. A wide range of extrinsic and intrinsic sources of acids and eating disorders that may results in dental erosion are sistematically presented. The extrinsic factors include dietary, medication and environmental factors. The intrinsic source of acids is gastric contents that may arrive in oral cavity by vomiting, regurgitation, reflux and rumination. The protective role of saliva and the importance of individual approach to the management of patients with dental erosion is also discussed. Third chapter stresses the importance of the systematic approach while getting to the diagnosis. Based on the history taking data, medical history data and on clinical examinations findings the individual management strategy may be formulated. It is also necessary to consider the patients expectations. Chapter four is entitled „Preventive measures“ and gives an overview of a range of preventive advice to counter the developing or progression of dental erosions. That includes patients educations, early recognition of dental erosion changes, risk factors assessment and control over further tooth surface loss. Fifth chapter gives the information on technologies that may be of assistance in the therapy procedure decision- making (preventive program and monitoring or restorative treatment). Finally, we can conclude that this book is articulate, systematic, easy to read and very appropriate for the practitioners who can find all the information about this topic at one place.
