Sažetak
INTRODUCTION The utilization of chemometric methods in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of feeds, foods, medicine and so on has been accompanied with the great evolution in the progress and in the near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) (Alishahi et al., 2010.). NIR is a non destructive and one of the fastest analytical technique which provides information on both chemical and physical properties of food stuffs. The aim of this research was to investigate the posibillity of NIR spectroscopy for monitoring different manufacturers and particle size distributions of NaCl. METHODOLOGY In this study experiments were conducted on salt samples from different commercial manufacturers. The samples were packed in three different packaging materials (PAP 21, PP 5, PET 1) and for each sample particle size was determined by laser diffraction using Malvern 2000 Mastersizer equipped with Scirocco 2000 dry dispersion unit (Malvern, UK). For each manufacturer different particle sizes were monitored and NIR spectra were collected over the range of 904-1699 nm using a Control Development, Inc., NIR-128-1.7-USB/6.25/50µm with installed Control Development software Spec32. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION NIR spectra of salt samples were imported to STATISTICA v. 9.0 software and PCA analysis was performed. Results obtained for different salt samples showed good separation based on sample origin (manufacturer) and a good classification for different particle size distributions. In order to implement NIR spectroscopy for on-line monitoring of particle sizes of salt detailed calibration must be performed. CONCLUSIONS Combining NIR spectroscopy with chemometric methods such as principal component analysis provides a powerfull tool for for quality and particle size monitoring of salt and other powders.
