Sažetak
There are numerous barriers that the EU Small and medium enterprises (SME in the further text) are facing in their constant struggle to survive nowadays. One of them is to maintain the sustainable competitiveness in the global economy, particularly when the constant growing threat from the Eastern Asia countries and the United States. In this paper authors are presenting the implications and barriers for performing the R&D and innovation activities within and for the SME’s today from various points of view. Emphasis on the innovation funding options will be given since the Croatia and few other EU countries have open access for financing innovative projects. An example of technology development and R&D performing within SME supported by EU co-financing instrument will be given, The barriers mentioned in theory were confirmed in practical implementation process Croatia's SME practice.
