Sažetak
Cover crops are essential component of crop rotation in organic agriculture. They representing an effective methods for the improvement of soil conditions through the protection against environmental deterioration, organic matter and nitrogen content accumulation, yield increase of the following main crop and even the weed control. Legume- cereal mixtures are commonly used in cover crop management since the nitrogen conservation from previous leguminouse crop is very important, especially in the organic agriculture where the use of N-fertilizers is strictly forbidden. To optimize environmental benefits and minimize potential limitations for crop production, cover crops must be managed carefully. Cover crops that have been growing in off-season winter period need to be managed before planting the next cash crop. The choice of the proper cover crop has been insufficiently investigated, especially for agri-environmental conditions of the Panonian agricultural area in Croatia. The cover crop experiment was conducted in Valpovo, Croatia, over to years (2008/09 and 2009/10) to study the effects of different cover crops and their combinations on pop-corn maize (Zea mais L. everta yield and yield components in organic agriculture after soybean (Glycine max L.) in crop rotation. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four blocks. The twelve cover crop treatments were tested: N – Control, without cover crop ; W – winter wheat (Triticum aestivum ) ; R – rye (Secale cereale) ; P – fodder pea (Pisum arvense) ; V - hairy vetch (Vicia vilosa) ; F - phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) ; and cover crop mixtures WP, WV, RP, RV, FP and FV. All cover crops treatments resulted with higher maize yield in 2009 comparing to control, with the exception of RV treatment which recorded the lowest results. Hectolitre mass did not show any statistical differences among treatments but in average it was lower in 2010 comparing to 2009. Cover crops treatments in average resulted with higher yield and 1000 grain weight in 2010 comparing to 2009. The best cover crops treatments proved to be WV in 2010 and FV in 2009 with the highest obtained maize yield.
