Sažetak
The presence of Christian symbolism, intertwined with Gnostic and esoteric elements, as the underlying structure of several Pirandello’s writings, has been thoroughly studied by Umberto Artioli, while other scholars, such as Barilli or Macchia, have pointed out the Franciscan provenance of a number of motifs not only of the author’s narratives, but also at the centre of his poetics of humourism. Pirandellian critics almost unanimously acknowledge that holy patterns in the work of the Sicilian modernist author undergo a significant rearrangement by means of alterations reverting the eschatological substance of religious models into a tragic parable at the limit of nihilism. However, there is a sacred topic which, according to the most of Pirandello scholarship, constitutes an unbreakable knot, resistant to the upsetting effects of humouristic confrontation: it is the bond which ties the Holy Mother to her Son, the divine and unique core of humanity which cannot be dissected. The paper will propose an interpretive reshaping of that relationship.
